Academy House

Preliminary design for a current condo apartment building historically connected to the period architecture prevalent in its nineteenth century community.

Alpha Fire Company

Municipal fire station housing fire and ambulance apparatus with supporting facilities for firemen and women oriented to one-way street access built over a network of limestone pinnacles and sub-surface voids.

The Avenue – Apartments & Clubhouse

Suburban density multi-family, multi-building complex adjacent to major universities with state-of-the art living units and amenities.  Projects also include a signature Clubhouse, pool pavilion, and supporting service buildings.  Projects range from 250-500 apartment units.

Boalsburg Medical Office Building

Initial low-slung medical building for future second floor while meeting strict requirements as part of the rezoning minimizing impact on the adjacent residential neighborhood.

Citizens Bank Diner, Theater

Preliminary design for an urban mixed-use commercial structure featured with a classic “popcorn palace”.  Project was intended to stimulate commercial venture interests.

Copper Beech Townhouses

Our firm has worked with Copper Beech since 2003 in developing off campus student housing communities in over 18 locations. These projects feature residential scale units for small student living groups in a home-like setting. The communities also include a clubhouse building including the leasing office, lounge space and game room overlooking a pool deck and a state of the art fitness center.

Glenn O. Hawbaker Office Building

Corporate office as distinctive neighbor to Williamsburg Square and anchor to interstate interchange.

GN Associates – The Graduate, Park Place, Diplomat, Legend and Burrowes Corner

In the heart of State College and the student rental market GN Associates has delivered multiple mixed use apartment buildings.  The typical structures for these buildings was precast concrete with CMU bearing walls designed for speed of construction, fire safety and superior sound ratings between floors.

Heritage Run Offices

Distinctive suburban office with residential character as transition between zoning districts.

HFL – Centre Court, Bryce Jordan Tower, The Meridian

Urban density multi-family, mixed-used complexes adjacent to Penn State campus integrating living units, commercial space and parking levels.  Living units in Centre Court include innovative first ever single occupant bedrooms in an urban location in State College.

 

 

Hitching Post Tack Shop

This project is located in a rural area outside of State College.  We provided schematic design and planning for this conversion of a retired milking barn to a tack shop and western wear store.

Holiday Inn Express

Designed as featured element in Williamsburg Square and landmark for highway interchange.  Detailing of the building favored colonial elements and contemporary use.

Juniata Valley Bank – Operations

Prominent highway commercial presence and focus on architectural style similar to community standards but contemporary with its function.

Juniata Valley Bank – Burnham

Addition and renovation to an existing outdated structure to establish new visible but tasteful presence on a commercial strip.

Marriott Courtyard

Minitab Corporate Conference Center

The Minitab Conference Center is a 20,000 sf facility designed to support conference functions for this expanding global statistical software company.  The newly built conference center is nestled in a hillside property adjacent to the main corporate campus.  The goal of the project was to provide a unique retreat-like setting for the company to host conferences serving corporate executives and clientele.  This high efficiency building includes ground source heat pumps, continuous insulation design and a green roof system.

Mountain View Country Club Pro Shop

We have completed the conceptual design phase for a new pro shop and entry canopy at the existing Mountain View Country Club. The existing country club is constructed with heavy timber and masonry. The new architectural design matches the use of heavy timber but contrasts the building with a modern touch to give a sense of welcoming entry that the existing building lacks.

Our Lady of Victory – Activity Center

Expansion of an existing campus of religious structures with a similar style for continuity of period architecture.

Patton Township Offices

Municipal office intended to have an unimposing but inviting style in a rural setting.

Evolution of an 1800s farmhouse into an expanded family homestead capturing a southern flavor reflecting the client’s Georgian heritage.

This single family residence is on a multi-acre plot outside State College.  The project scope included a sunroom addition and a master bedroom and bath addition.  Additionally the existing kitchen was remodeled to create a larger space with added natural lighting and relocation of the laundry.  The exterior of the house was also resided and a new entry porch element added.

This contemporary house is located atop a wooded hillside lot overlooking downtown State College.  The exterior is finished with sandstone and red cedar siding.  The house features open airy living spaces with west facing clerestory windows.

This single family retirement residence is located on a multi-acre rural hilltop site. The house

design takes full advantage of the spectacular views and lots of natural lighting. The project also incorporates an on grade solar field.

PSECU

The PSECU location in downtown State College was a renovation of an old office building.

An existing garage was renovated into a student housing duplex at St. Francis University.

Remote, rustic location reflected in simple architectural terms capturing the essence and quietude of its surroundings.

State College Borough Water Authority

Municipal office additions and renovations as a continuation of an earlier building style to assimilate all of the multi-staged elements

Sutliff Car Dealership

Major retrofitting of obsolete auto dealership upgraded and expanded into a modern and brand-specific dealership according to existing corporate standards.

Suzanne Pohland Paterno Catholic Student Faith Center

Uniquely designed to assimilate an ecclesiastical structural into a small scale residential neighborhood but with distinctive elements announcing its religious but unintimidating intention.

The Avenue – Clubhouse

The Clubhouse building is designed to provide the best amenities package available to the student housing community.  It features a 3,200 sf Fitness Center with yoga and spinning studios.  The project also includes a movie theatre, golf simulator, game room, computer lab, and tanning rooms.  The facility also features a state of the art resort style pool area.

The P Hotel and Spa

Preliminary design for a Big 10 condo hotel minutes from Penn State’s Beaver Stadium including mixed uses while meeting building height restrictions and limited site flexibility.  Project included initiatives toward LEED gold certification.

Trader Joes Plaza

This 65,000 sf retail center is home to Pier 1 Imports, Trader Joe’s, Men’s Wearhouse, Gap, Ulta, and Old Navy.  The design features a warm color palette combining tenant branding with common architectural detailing.  The complex takes advantage of the sloping site to create a terraced front elevation.

Urban Outfitters

Retrofitting an existing bank building into a contemporary retail space for Urban Outfitters. The project included the removal of an existing vault and revamping of the building’s exterior envelope, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.

Westerly Parkway Plaza Facade Improvements

Fernsler Hutchinson was hired to renovate the existing facades at an aging strip mall property in State College.

The project included , accessibility improvements, reroofing and replacement of the storefront systems and tenant signage.

Wyndham Garden Hotel at the Mountain View Country Club

Wynwood House at Nittany Valley

Fernsler Hutchinson Architecture is excited to announce the completion of Wynwood House at Nittany Valley a 19,000 SF, and 40 bed Personal Care Community in Boalsburg, PA. The community has been designed based on a ‘neighborhood’ plan. The two neighborhoods will each house 20 residents in the building. In addition to the resident rooms, each neighborhood will contain a day room, linen/laundry area, showers and exterior covered porch. The central core of the community will contain the fellowship area, dining area (with seating for all residents), kitchen, activity, offices, medication/staff, and beauty/barber room.

Beyond the typical services rendered as the architectural firm, one partner, Vice President Adam Fernsler, also acted as one of the owners and developers for the project.
